Antigua Sailing Week is one of the world’s biggest sailing event and is world renowned for its world-class racing and all- night partying. Antigua sailing week began in 1967 with only ten boats this year schedule has grown to include over 200 boat entries.
The races take the yachts all around the islands including Dickerson bay, Jolly Harbour, Falmouth Harbour, and down the east coast, you do not have to be a sailor to enjoy the island festivities during the sailing week there is a lot of non- competing yachts who tag along to see the actions. There is also a lot of great lookout points to witness the sailing actions.
The real fun of sailing week and the part that I enjoy is the evening parties when the yachts have completed the day races. These all-night parties depicting a carnival-like atmosphere there is dancing, eating, drinking and revelling during the night.
There are a host of street side and beach vendors selling all types of local Antigua dishes from delicious, grilled chicken, pork, fish, lobster, baked potatoes, patties, meatballs, and the famous local Antigua’s beer the Wadadlli beer.
Visitors visiting the island during sailing week can join in the weeks fun, whether you are on a cruise or just on vacation at one of the local resorts, there are lots of fun things to do during sailing week just ask any cab driver or resort front office personnel, about the day’s event and they will be happy to share details with you. Or you can visit the Antigua sailing week web site http://www.sailingweek.com for the sailing week itinerary. As with any island the crime rates go up during festive times so extra caution should be exercised. Some of the tips I share with my groups are as follows
- Leave all valuables in your hotels safe or onboard your cruise ships
- Be care full when using cash carry only what you think you will need showing too much cash calls for trouble
- Try to travel in groups and stay close to your group.
- Be care full when walking in the unlighted beach are,
- Stay away from beach peddler’s unless they are selling legal goods
Remember you want to have fun but you also want to be safe, as in anything be sensible, pay attention and exercise caution
